Hi Mike. You're too late, I've got an iPhone already. A certain member of our local MUG put on a full court press at our last meeting where he coincidentally demoed the iPhone, even going so far as to come by my place very late after the meeting and after the post-meeting dinner to test his at my place (AT&T's online coverage map showed a 3 block bubble of low signal centered over my house, naturally.) His iPhone worked fine so I got one the next day.

And AT&T was right, the signal bobbles between 3 or 4 bars and "no signal" at times while inside my house. I might actually be TOO CLOSE to the local cell tower which I can see out my window. More testing to be done.

I can see a few 1.0 issues but not many. You're right, GPS sure would be nice, but overall I'm really happy so far. Then again, I had no cell phone at all previous to this, which resulted in continuous harassment from my family. If I had said I was now waiting for 2.0 I might have been physically assaulted.

My wife "got me" an iPhone the day after they came out. She is now using it (which I think was her plan from the outset. Here's my take on the iPhone:

I would resist buying it now. Here's what I see as the downsides:

1) It does not voice dial. I use my phone regularly in the car, and it's really nice to be able to say into your bluetooth headset: "Call home" and have it dial that. It's a whole lot safer than dialing.
2) It does not yet have GPS. I am "directionally challenged." A GPS that tells me where to go is a wonderful feature. I do have a GPS, but having one built into my phone would be great.

I love the design. I love the interface. I like being able to get to the web, to pick up email, and to do minor surfing.

It's just going to be a whole lot better. Which means, for me, that I'm going to wait on MY iPhone until those features are added.
